Who We Are

Family-Owned

In 1979, after Hurricane Frederic devastated their seafood shop in Coden, Alabama, James and Michael Rice pivoted to boat building, founding Master Boat Builders. What started as a small venture quickly grew into an internationally recognized manufacturer of work boats. The shipyard emphasizes a supportive community where employees are valued as individuals, fostering a close-knit environment focused on their success.

What We do

Innovative Designs

Over its 40-year history, Master Boat Builders has adapted to the evolving shipbuilding industry. In the 80’s, they focused on small utility boats. As demand surged in the shrimp fishing sector, the company shifted its focus to building shrimp boats. In the 90s, oil exploration and production increased in the Gulf of Mexico, and Master Boat Builders transitioned primarily to building Oil Supply Vessels for almost 20 years. More recently, the company entered the tugboat market, achieving significant milestones by delivering innovative hybrid tugs and the first all-electric battery tug in the United States, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.

We Build Hardworking Boats

OUR all-electric tugboat

First of its kind in the United States

In 2024, Master Boat Builders delivered the first all-electric ship assist harbor tugboat in the U.S. demonstrating where the maritime industry can go in terms of innovation and sustainability. The tug will generate 178 tons less of nitrogen oxide (NOx), 2.5 tons less of diesel particulate matter and 3,100 metric tons less of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the first 10 years of its operations – the equivalent of removing 350,000 gallons of gas from use, according to EPA calculations.
